Ohmstik XT PLUS Live-Line Power Quality Meter

SensorLink has released the Ohmstik XT PLUS to all utility markets. This rugged live-line micro-ohmmeter stores up to nine Current and Micro-Ohm readings, and provides engineers with the data to predict connector failure years in advance, allowing for replacement on a planned basis, before failure occurs.

Acme, WA, 1 March 2006 – SensorLink Corporation’s Ohmstik XT PLUS is available for micro-ohm measurements in utility environments up to 500kV and 1400A. This rugged unit is designed to store up to nine sets of readings, ending the need to raise and lower the hotstick after each reading.

The Ohmstik XT PLUS is specifically designed to measure the exact micro-ohm resistance of conductors, connectors, splices and switching devices positioned directly on an energized, high voltage line. The universal hotstick adaptor and internal structure of the unit is made of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane. This polymer is non-conductive and extra tough to protect the amp sensors in severe utility environments.

The Ohmstik XT PLUS can be used on almost any connection in a utility, either at installation or surveyed after years of usage; Line splices, bolted terminals , taps, jumpers, substation bus bars and switches. The direct resistance measurement is much more exact than infrared thermography. It is not subject to emmissivity, weather, current loading, background and other influences that cause infrared errors.

Deterioration is due to increases in resistance of the connection. Resistance can be produced by peaks of load and fault current that head the interface, even if only temporarily or for a few cycles. Other factors of deterioration are the oxidation of the interfaces during thermal expansion and cooling, and by corrosion and accelerated by moisture and chemicals that get between the strands. These influences will accelerate the deterioration of connectors that are not installed properly.

Research data on connector reliability indicates that there will be further problems with unexpected failures than have occurred in the past. These failures come at a time when the need for reliability is essential. The OhmstikPlus gives users information to predict a failure years in advance, allowing for replacement on a planned basis, before failure occurs.

SensorLink Corporation was founded in 1985 with the mission of providing high technology research and engineering assistance for companies searching to improve their competitive edge. SensorLink was then approached by a power utility with a request to develop a device that would eliminate the mechanical clamp from measurements of current. An inductive sensor was developed that is now used in almost all SensorLink products. SensorLink’s primary focus is now the manufacturing of live-line Meters and Recorders for Medium and High Voltage electric utility systems.
